This author, Portland police officer, and Clackamas Community College instructor, will discuss his book. Fighting For Paradise: A Military History of the Pacific Northwest is an account of some of the little known military engagements that book place right here in our region. Although the book covers the time from the first European settlement to the present, Mr. Nelson will concentrate on the incidents that occurred in WWII. Oregon Before the White Explorers Knew It

photo, artist Lillian Pitt
Hillsboro Main Library will be presenting a talk by Native American artist Lillian Pitt, Sunday, January 18 at 2 PM. The talk and an exhibit of her carvings, masks and sculpture are free of charge.

Ms. Pitt, a member of the Warm Springs/Wasco tribe, will speak about the life and culture of the Columbia River Gorge’s indigenous people before the Gorge was explored and settled by white pioneers.

“I use the ancient stories of my ancestors as a basis for the imagery I create. By doing this I maintain the memory of an ancient culture and keep the beliefs of my people alive.... My ancestors have a 10,000 year history in the Columbia River Gorge. Much of my work has to do with the preservation and care of the environment along this ancient waterway,” Ms. Pitt explains.

“She Who Watches,” the Columbia River petroglyph that represents the last of the Woman Chiefs, appears frequently in her work.

Primarily a ceramics artist, she also produces sculptures in glass, bronze, and wood. She also creates paintings, drawings, prints, jewelry, and wearable art.

Her work is exhibited often in Portland galleries, including Quintana, and in museums; she also has contributed to public artworks. Her most recent award was the Earle A. Chiles Award for 2007 in acknowledgement for her art in sustaining ancient Columbia Plateau cultures and beliefs, and for promoting harmony within people, communities, and nature.

Portland Taiko Drumming Concert

Portland Taiko is a premiere North American taiko ensemble.

Taiko (the Japanese word for drum and the name of the art form) has its roots in ancient Japanese tradition. It was used in religious ceremonies, community festivals and theater. American Taiko became a powerful voice during the struggle for redress of the Japanese American Internment.

According to the Idaho Statesman, “it shakes your body to the core. It’s layer upon layer upon layer of drumming and music and sound. The space will vibrate. The chairs will vibrate. You will vibrate to your core. And you’ll want more. Witness the drama and artistry of Portland Taiko.”

Film night: Snow Falling on Cedars

Based on the award winning novel, this riveting mystery takes place in the Pacific Northwest and deals with prejudice towards Japanese-Americans after WWII.

Japanese American Kabuo Miyomoto is arrested in 1954 for the murder of a fellow fisherman, Carl Heine. Miyomoto’s trial, which provides the focal point to the film, stirs memories of past relationships and events. The trial illuminates the grief of loss, the sting of prejudice triggered by World War II, and the imperatives of conscience. The film poetically evokes the beauty of the land while revealing the harshness of war, the nuances of our legal system, and the injustice done to those interned in U.S. relocation camps.

Origami "Cranes for Peace" Art Project

paper crane

As part of this year’s Oregon Reads program, the Friends of North Plains Public Library are organizing an art project using origami. In Japan, origami cranes are often given as a symbol of friendship. The crane symbolizes long life, prosperity and good health and recently has become a symbol of peace throughout the world.

During the month of February, our goal is to fold hundreds of cranes and display them in the library. We invite you to fold as many cranes as you can. No prior experience with origami is necessary. On your crane(s) you may write a wish promoting peace, prosperity and good health to friends, neighbors, loved ones and people around the world.

We will hold an Open House Workshop on February 7th, 2009 from 1 to 4 pm at the North Plains Library.

Or you can fold your crane(s) at home, using a piece of plain white (or colored) paper and following the Origami Crane Directions which include a video tutorial. Then drop them off at the library.

The Internment of Japanese-Americans during WW II

Henry Sakamoto will speak from personal experience of the internment of 112,581 Japanese-Americans during WWII. Born and raised in Portland, he was a teenager in 1942 when he and his family were among the 3,700 persons of Japanese ancestry detained and confined behind barbed wires and under military guard at an assembly center now known as the Expo Center, before being taken to the Minidoka Idaho Internment Camp (one of 10 camps). This was part of the total evacuation and internment of 112,581 persons of Japanese ancestry from the West Coast of the United States — including U.S. citizens — as well as legal immigrants. All this without being charged with a crime or given due process under the law.

Henry Sakamoto is the president of Japanese Ancestral Society of Portland and co-founder of the Oregon Nikkei Legacy Center.

Obsidian: History Through the Volcanic Glass Window

photo, Dennis Jenkins Archeologist Dr. Dennis Jenkins from the University of Oregon will discuss this beautiful volcanic igneous glass and how it can give us a fascinating glimpse into the pre-history of Oregon.

Flows of obsidian, a natural glass produced by many volcanoes in Oregon, contain a unique chemical signature that enables archaeologists to trace artifacts back to the volcano of origin. Obsidian is also an unstable mineral that begins absorbing molecular water soon after a fresh surface is exposed to the atmosphere, a process that produces a detectible rind that thickens at a predictable rate under various site conditions, producing a “hydration clock” that tells the age of each artifact and flake.

Archaeologist Dennis Jenkins will discuss the invaluable information about our culture stored within nature in “Obsidian: History through the Volcanic Glass Window.” Hillsboro Main Public Library is pleased to host this Oregon Chautauqua from the Oregon Council for the Humanities. This free, public program will take place on Wednesday, February 11 at 6:30pm at Hillsboro Main Public Library, 2850 NE Brookwood Parkway, Hillsboro.

Obsidian artifacts yield a treasure-trove of information about prehistoric lifeways and the development of sociopolitical areas in central Oregon across fifteen thousand years of prehistory. Archaeologist Dennis Jenkins presents a fascinating look at the trail of information left by this beautiful volcanic glass.

A Special Screening of the Film, On Paper Wings, with filmmaker Ilana Sol

In the spring of 1945, a Japanese balloon bomb claimed the lives of the only people killed on the continental U.S. as the result of enemy action during WWII. Forty years later, the decision to fold a thousand paper cranes would unite the Japanese and American civilians who were involved in and affected by this incident.

"On Paper Wings" is the story of four Japanese women who worked on balloon bombs, the families of those killed in the U.S., and the man whose actions brought them all together forty years after WWII, and the balloon bomb project.

Films are free and open to the public.

Stick around after the show to meet the filmaker Ilana Sol.

A Family Gathering screening

This award-winning documentary is about the Yasui family, featured in Stubborn Twig.
Silences—the stuff of assumptions and confusion—is a legacy inherited by many grandchildren of Japanese Americans interned during WWII. Shortly after Japan attacked Pearl Harbor, Masuo Yasui, a respected figure of Hood River, Oregon, was arrested by the FBI as a 'potentially dangerous enemy alien.' In A Family Gathering, Lise Yasui, a granddaughter that Masuo never knew, shows that courageous journeys into the past can bring greater understanding of family and personal history to the family.

El Tesora ... Cuento y Canciones or The Treasure ... Story and Song

Musical theater plus language lessons equal fun in this bilingual musical theater where audiences are encouraged to sing along in English and Spanish, participate in the story and play games. An all-ages event presented by Learning English and Spanish through the Arts (L.E.S.T.A.) at the Shute Park Branch on Saturday, April 18 at 2 p.m.

There will be one performance only and admission is free; seating is limited, so be sure to arrive early.

L.E.S.T.A. uses musical theater as a way to integrate fun and language lessons. According to Cyndi Turtledove, L.E.S.T.A.’s Artistic Director, “Theater is the perfect combination of all four language skills: reading, writing, listening, and speaking. It is natural to move while we speak, and it natural to speak while we move.”

L.E.S.T.A. shows are truly bilingual, and use both Spanish and English during the same show, sometimes alternating languages between lines — without exact translations, but becoming understandable through the interaction of questions and answers by the characters. People who come to the shows and speak/understand NO English and only Spanish, understand the whole show, and people who come and speak/understand NO Spanish but only English also understand the whole show because of this.

As part of the performance, audience members will have the opportunity to sing along in English and in Spanish, participate in the story, and play games. Attendees will also take away some bilingual vocabulary!
