Starting Your Own Book Club
Oregon Reads 2009
Once you decide to start your own book group, you should consider how the book group will work. Below are some questions you might ask in order to determine what your book group will look like. These questions and more are explored in the book: The Reading Group Handbook, by Rachel Jacobsohn.
A few questions to consider:
- How big will your group be?
- Where will you meet?
- Will you serve food, and if so, who is in charge of that?
- Who is in your group? Is it all women/men? All ages? Who can join?
- Can members attend even if they have not read the book (or books)?
- Who will facilitate the group? Will you take turns?
- Who will contact the group members, and how will you contact them?
- Do you want author information presented? If so, who will gather this info?
- What is the expected level of discussion? Will it be casual, or in-depth?
