Read (or Listen to) the Story!

Oregon Reads 2009

What if 50,000 Oregonians read the same book in our sesquicentennial year?

The Oregon Library Association and the libraries of Washington County want to find out!

The Oregon Reads 2009 committee selected three books for the community to read. And WCCLS has copies of each one available to borrow!

All three titles have an uniquely Oregon focus. They convey an Oregon experience, within reach of readers throughout the state including those with varying reading levels. All three titles are written by Oregon authors who will visit Washington County libraries.

cover, Bat 6

Bat 6

Since the turn of the century, two rival Oregon farm communities have put their differences behind them and come together once a year to watch their sixth-grade girls’ teams play softball. Bat 6 is their story, reconstructed just after it happened. The narrative is comprised of firsthand reporting from girls on both sides.

Bat 6 delves into the irreversible consequences of war and the necessity to cultivate peace and speaks volumes about courage, responsibility, and reconciliation — all in a book about softball.

Apples to Oregon

Subtitled "Being the (Slightly) True Narrative of How a Brave Pioneer Father Brought Apples, Peaches, Pears, Plums, Grapes, and Cherries (and Children) Across the Plains"

Apples, ho! When Papa decides to pull up roots and move from Iowa to Oregon with his family, he can't bear to leave his precious apple — and other fruit — trees behind. But the trail is cruel — there's a river that's wider than Texas ... and hailstones as big as plums ... and even a drought. Those poor pippins! Luckily his daughter won't let anything stop them from tasting the sweet Oregon soil.

Starting in January 2009 and running into April, Washington County libraries will offer events and programs centering on the selected books.

We invite Oregonians to celebrate the 150th year of Oregon statehood by taking part in Oregon Reads 2009.
