About Sherwood Public Library

The Sherwood Public Library began as a shelf of books in a local drugstore in 1935. The collection was later moved to a rented house. In 1969, the City of Sherwood agreed to support the library, which was moved to the basement of a historic house that served as City Hall. A Friends of the Library group formed in 1976 and began local fund-raising which, combined with LSCA money, built a new 3,000 square foot library in 1986.

In December 2005, the Sherwood Public Library & City Hall was opened, funded primarily through urban renewal funds and sales of city-owned properties. The new library features 14,000 square feet of space with more desks, Internet PCs, comfortable chairs, shelves and library materials. An added feature is a gas fireplace surrounded by comfortable seating in an inviting newspaper and magazine area.

The mission statement of Friends of the Sherwood Library:

To enable the Sherwood Public Library to enhance services, expand programs, promote literacy and add new dimensions that maximize the library's role and usefulness in the community.
